Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on postpartum contraception services in women delivering at a tertiary care centre in South India

Background: Contraception and sexual health are a fundamental human right an integral part of women’s services. Postpartum period is the unique opportunity for counselling availing contraception. COVID-19 pandemic hindered routine special services like postpartum clinics has negative impact on family planning Objectives were to assess effect contraceptive care received describe challenges faced in these among pregnant women delivering at tertiary centre South India.Methods: A descriptive study carried out 422 who had delivered our hospital from July 2020 October 2020. Data was collected Epicollect version 5 analysed using Stata 14.2.Results: total interviewed. Only one-third participants antenatal compared 90% postpartum. 39% (primiparous-34%/multiparous-5%) adopted barrier methods followed by post-partum intrauterine uterine devices 33% (primiparous-19.6%/multiparous-13.4%) 5% sterilisation concurrent with caesarean section. Around 30-40% accessing due closure elective clinics, operation theatres, nationwide lockdown, non-availability field workers.Conclusions: Contraceptive choices appear be largely restricted temporary additional during pandemic. With ongoing crisis continuous need contraception, there refocus motivate eligible couples long-acting reversible (LARC) significantly lower failure rates.
